I'm always amazed by this apple tree in a neighbour's garden. It regularly retains its fruit until February, long after its leaves fall, rather reminding me of a needle-less Christmas tree with nothing left but baubles by twelfth night. I've noticed similar trees brightening roadside hedgerows and suspect they are the result of seed raised cultivars from discarded apple cores thrown from car windows. Whilst perhaps some would predict this having a negative impact on the gene pool of wild crabapples, this one was certainly giving some blackbirds a winter feast yesterday morning and no doubt a welcome food source for many hungry creatures over the next few weeks
